Bio
Shawn clasps her locks with hemp string and a jade ring. Her real name is
Shawnta Smith, but no one can ever pronounce it, so call her Shawn. She writes
for fun, for compulsion, and cause she can't play the acoustic guitar.
She finds equilibrium as co-coordinator of a queer women of color writing group
in Brooklyn, NY where her secret goal is to assemble an army of queer women
writers, and as a producer/collective member of Rivers of Honey, a women of
color Cabaret at WOW Cafe Theater. Shawn is a Librarian and Archivist,
who received both her Masters in Library Science, and her Bachelors of Science
in Queer Women's Studies from the City University of New York. Prior to
academia, she co-founded Sister Outsider, (2000-2005), an organization for and
by self-supporting young women in Brooklyn. After ten years of grassroots
activism, community building, and u-hauling, she is now an Archivette with the
Lesbian Herstory Archives, a Young Adult Reference Librarian at Brooklyn Public
Library, and Membership and Fellowships Coordinator for the Center for Lesbian
and Gay Studies at the CUNY Graduate Center. She is the recipient
of numerous awards and fellowships.
